This is an opportunity for a seasoned
**Senior Java Backend Engineer**
to join a growing international engineering environment and play a key role in shaping the technical direction, engineering standards and evolution of a critical internal digital platform.
This is not simply a delivery role. You will act as a
**technical expert and senior engineering reference point**
, contributing to architecture, innovation, technical roadmap decisions and the development of engineering best practices within a growing Centre of Excellence.
The Role
You will take ownership of a defined area of the organisation's digital platform, working closely with Product, Engineering and other technical stakeholders.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing, developing and evolving
**Java / Spring Boot backend services**
within distributed, microservice-based environments.
- Acting as a technical reference point for backend engineering challenges and their interaction with infrastructure, frontend and other platform components.
- Contributing to the
**bottom-up technical roadmap**
, working closely with Product and engineering stakeholders.
- Introducing and evaluating new technologies and helping teams adopt innovative approaches where they add genuine value.
- Providing technical guidance to engineers and coordinating work across a sub-team to achieve shared delivery objectives.
- Supporting technical collaboration with external partners, subcontractors and suppliers.
- Designing and maintaining robust
**REST APIs**
and applying appropriate API security practices.
- Working with
**event-driven architectures**
, using technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Working across both relational and NoSQL database environments.
- Promoting high standards of automated testing and continuous integration.
- Championing engineering best practices including code review, documentation, testing and maintainable software design.
- Supporting and promoting agile ways of working across the development lifecycle.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for an experienced software engineer who combines
**strong hands-on Java expertise with architectural thinking and technical leadership**
.
You should bring:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
- Strong professional experience in
**Java and Spring Boot**
.
- Proven experience designing and operating
**microservices and distributed systems**
.
- Practical experience with
**event-driven architectures**
, ideally Kafka and/or RabbitMQ.
- Experience with both
**relational and NoSQL databases**
.
- Strong understanding of
**REST API design**
and API security, including OAuth2 and JWT.
- Solid experience with automated testing and continuous integration.
- Familiarity with Linux environments, shell scripting and software packaging.
- The ability to understand systems beyond the backend and collaborate effectively across infrastructure, frontend and platform teams.
- Experience providing technical guidance or coordinating engineers.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently within a multicultural, international environment.
- **Fluent English.**
Nice to Have
Experience with some or all of the following would be advantageous:
- AWS, particularly ECS / Fargate
- Docker
- Kubernetes
- GitLab CI/CD
